In the winter of 1986, the trees that lined the streets of Sendai in Japan looked dark and dreary, with fallen leaves flying by. People that wanted to brighten the tree-lined streets created a volunteer group that spanned across all jobs and ages, which turned into a movement shared by everyone in the city. Many small lights gathered and appeared in front of everyone's eyes as a beautiful fantasy road covered with stars. n December 23, people dress up as Santa Claus and parade under the lights, singing, dancing, and enjoying the cold winter weather. The Sendai Pageant of Starlight is an event lead by volunteers that is still loved to this day.
