The moose (North America) or elk (Europe), Alces alces, is the largest extant species in the deer family. The palmate antlers of the males distinguish moose. Other members of the family have antlers with a twig-like configuration.
In Europe, elk are found in large numbers throughout Norway, Sweden, Finland and the Baltic States. They are also widespread throughout Russia. In Lapland there are many elk found everywhere except the mountainous areas in Northern Lapland.
