In the winter, Rovaniemi, the capital of Lapland in Finland, is a city of snow and the Northern Lights. Anywhere in Rovaniemi, winter sports are only a step away: cross-country ski trails abound, and Ounasvaara Ski Resort, offering downhill skiing and snowboarding, can actually be seen from the city centre. There are also plenty of opportunities to go snowmobiling, dogsledding or on a reindeer sleigh ride. Rovaniemi is also the home town of Santa Claus.
